ASAP Utilities error in Excel

ASAP Utilities manual installation steps

Although we recommend the automatic installation, the manual installation is easy to do. This can for example be used if you work in a network environment and the program files are (already) stored on a network location.

Installation documentation

More detailed information about the installation of ASAP Utilities is available in our User Guide. The User Guide also contains important information for network-installations.

Prior to installing

  • You must be logged in as an administrator or as a member of the Power Users group to run the setup or you can choose to run the setup as administrator. When the installation is finished every user on the computer is able to use ASAP Utilities.
  • It is not recommended to uninstall a previous version of ASAP Utilities. If you do so all settings will be reset to the default settings, such as your favorite tools menu.
  • It is strongly recommended that all programs currently running on your PC be closed.
  • If you have Excel 2003, make sure your Security Level is not set to "Very High" before you run the setup. With this "Very High" setting you will not be able to use ASAP Utilities. In the Excel menu choose: Tools > Macro > Security and set it to high in that case.

Performing the installation

Step 1

Place all the ASAP Utilities files on you hard drive. It doesn't matter what the location is, as long as all the files in the package are together.
The recommended location is: C:\Program Files\ASAP Utilities\

Step 2

Register the ASAP Utilities library DLL. For this part you need administrator or power user rights.
  1. Close all open programs.
  2. Click Start on the Windows taskbar, click Run, and then type the following:
    Regsvr32.exe "<Install Path>\asap_utilities.dll"
    for example:
    Regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\ASAP Utilities\asap_utilities.dll"
  3. Press Enter, or if you use Windows Vista, press Control+Shift+Enter
The following message should appear: DllRegisterServer in <Install Path>\asap_utilities.dll succeeded.

Step 3

Start Microsoft Excel and in the tools menu, choose Add-Ins. If you are using Excel 2007/2010 the approach for the next steps is a bit different.

You will now see a list of all add-ins available, something similar like the following screenshot:

Step 4

Click on the browse-button in the Add-Ins dialog to locate the ASAP Utilities.xla file
(by default in the folder C:\Program Files\ASAP Utilities\)
If Excel asks you to copy the file to the library folder, always answer "no". (this is important)

Step 5

Check the "ASAP Utilities" check box and press the OK-button. When you do that ASAP Utilities will be started. The first time it will register the file ASAP_Utilities.dll.

Step 6

Next to "Help" in the menu, there is an option called "ASAP Utilities".
If you do not see ASAP Utilities in the menu you have to close and restart Excel.
the ASAP Utilities menu

Step 7: Make ASAP Utilities the full registered version

  1. In the Excel menu choose "ASAP Utilities" > "Trial version"
    Or
In the Excel menu choose "ASAP Utilities" > "Unregistered version" and then click on the button "Enter registration information"

    Excel 2000, 2002/XP and 2003:

Excel menu ASAP Utilities Unregistered version

    Excel 2007/2010:

Excel 2007 menu > ASAP Utilities > Unregistered version
  2. Fill in the fields exactly as used when you placed your order. You received two emails after the order was completed. The email from "ASAP Utilities (A Must in Every Office BV)" contains the full license information.
After you entered the information click on the "Register" button.
We recommend you to use "copy and paste" to avoid typing errors. The information is case sensitive. You can use the shortcut Control+V to paste the information in the fields.

Tech info: DLL registration, administrative privileges

You must be logged in as an administrator or as a member of the Power Users group when installing ASAP Utilities . When the installation is finished every user on the computer is able to use ASAP Utilities.
Some systems do not allow certain sections of the registry to be written to by users without administrative privileges. It is recommended that only those with administrator privileges and those that are logged on as administrator install ASAP Utilities on such a computer.
The file "ASAP Utilities.dll" is registered as ActiveX (COM) component on the machine, using the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry entry. That means that to register the add-in you need to be a member of the "Administrators" or "Advanced Users" groups. ASAP Utilities creates the following key. This way all users on the computer can work with ASAP Utilities. If you choose the manual installation the DLL is registered the first time you start Excel with ASAP Utilities.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins\ASAP_Utilities.adConnect
